Back to The Basics of Electronic Recycling

Emily Boser - Thursday, November 17, 2016

Sometimes we all could use a refresher, go back to the beginning and understand the fundamentals.

When recycling electronics, whether it be computers, phones, printers servers or switches, it’s important to understand the basics.

SERI (The housing body for the R2 Standard) has put together some great content that covers 5 great topics…

What are used electronics?

Used electronics vary widely in size, shape, weight, age and technological complexity - including everything from last year's high end mobile phone, to a server in a data center. Many of these products can be repaired and reused. All others can be recycled for their scrap materials.

A Growing Problem

Approximately 15 pounds of used electronics are generated per capita worldwide - but less than 20% are recycled. The volume of used electronics is expected to increase over 33% by the end of the decade, with much of that growth coming from emerging economies.

Environment & Data Risks

Electronics can contain mercury, cadmium, phosphors, lead, and other substances that can contaminate the air, soil, and water if sent to a landfill or are otherwise improperly managed. Increasing numbers of electronic devices also contain sensitive user data, including contact information, credit cards, medical histories, photos, and other information.

Repair & Reuse

Reuse is widely recognized as the most environmentally beneficial form of materials management. Repairing and reusing electronics extends the useful life of products and keeps them out of the waste stream. It also recovers more value per unit than any other form of materials management. Not only that, reusing electronics devices reduces the need to manufacture new units, and makes affordable electronics more accessible to a wider range of consumers.

Recycling

Recovery of valuable metals and other materials from end-of-life electronics provides a sustainable solution when reuse is no longer feasible. “Urban mining” for rare and precious materials contained in electronic devices stretches our planet’s limited supply of natural resources and requires less energy than the mining of new metals.

3 Benefits of Corporate Garden

Emily Boser - Thursday, October 13, 2016

The temperatures are beginning to drop and for those of us at ER2 based out of our Arizona location, it's the perfect time to start our fall garden! We have had a lot of interest from our Team Members surrounding the garden and we believe it's our responsibility to demonstrate what we are protecting. Corporate gardens provide are great investments regardless the industry.

HighGrove.net put out a great article about the benifets of having a corporate garden that employees can be a part of.

Improved Memory

A University of Michigan study published in 2008 found that the more time spent outside in close proximity to plants can help increase memory retention by up to 20 percent. Studies have also shown that time spent in and around plants can increase an employee’s attention span and improve concentration as well as productivity.

Stress Reduction

Corporate gardens that encourage employees to prune, pluck or pick up a watering can play an important role in helping reduce an employee’s stress. Activities related to gardening offer those of us under stress a distraction and a way to divert our attention to something stress free and good for the environment — like nurturing a plant.

Follow a hummingbird from blossom to blossom, or stop and actually smell the roses — sometimes the visual stimulation from a professionally designed commercial landscape is enough to reduce stress and anxiety, too.

Encourages On-Site Team Building

Many employers will budget for team-building activities, most of which take place off site. Give them a reason to save on transportation costs and create a connection with your property. Just think about the team-building that can be accomplished — and community goodwill — by having raised beds installed to grow vegetables for the needy.

Trade Shows: More Than Just Sales

Emily Boser - Thursday, September 22, 2016

Typically the first thing business’ think when they hear ‘trade show’ is sales opportunities. While that may be a big portion of them it’s important to remember trade shows are more than just sales.

For us, at ER2, trade shows provide an important platform for some awesome face time with our current client base. Face time that we would otherwise not necessarily get the chance to have. Trade shows put us out in front of our clients and provides a really easy and relaxed way to interact with them. And because the sales side of it is always going to be there it actually reaffirms for our clients, the many reasons they chose to do business with us in the first place.

The key to this valuable interaction is knowing when it will be an opportunity. When we evaluate trade shows and determine which ones we will attend we are taking a look at few factors.

What is the related industry for the trade show?

Who will the attendee’s be at the trade show?

Have we participated in this trade show in prior years?

Based off the previous questions, does the trade show provide a sales platform, a client engagement platform or both?

For example there are certain trade shows we participate in every year even though most of the attendees are already our clients. We may have a few new client opportunities, however the main purpose for our attendance is simply to connect face to face with our existing clients in a fun environment. It’s an fantastic to pull feedback from our clients, what works for them and maybe what’s not working.

Next time a trade show opportunity arises, filter it through the questions and really understand the full potential of attending. Looking past the sales aspect of trade shows can add value and bring new interactions between you and your clients.

ER2 Perspective: ITAD Expansion

Emily Boser - Thursday, September 15, 2016

With the E-Scrap Conference just around the corner in New Orleans there will be discussion across the board surrounding a broad spectrum of industry topics!

One of those topics particularly, ITAD, has been of peak interest to many in the electronic recycling facet. There are so many things to consider when breaking into the ITAD sector, a lot that most overlook.

We, ER2, recently published an article in the September issue of E-Scrap News in partnership with Resource Recycling regarding this very topic...
