So you want to expand into ITAD?

Emily Boser - Thursday, January 05, 2017

We, ER2, recently wrote an article for the E-Scrap News of Resource Recycling surrounding the idea of moving from solely an electronic recycler to a full ITAD (IT asset disposition) service company.

Like most aspects of life, operating in the e-scrap world is more complex than it might first appear. And it’s becoming more complicated for many companies in the market as they try to define a workable business model.

Today, there is a deep focus on the environmental responsibility associated with electronic recycling companies, and many operators built their businesses on the principle of handling material in an environmentally conscientious way.

However, being a recycler that is focused on commodity recovery without any refurbishment or reuse has become difficult. Over the past few years, commodity prices have softened and precious-metal reclaim efforts have declined. Therefore, as any savvy business owner would do, e-scrap leaders have looked into innovative ways to maximize their revenue and profits from the products they receive.

For many, the path forward involves transitioning to become an ITAD (IT asset disposition) service company rather than a pure accumulator of end-of-life electronics that are destined for commodity recovery. While that shift represents a smart long-term financial move for many operators, successfully entering ITAD takes careful planning and an understanding of some key points.

Trade Shows: More Than Just Sales

Emily Boser - Thursday, September 22, 2016

Typically the first thing business’ think when they hear ‘trade show’ is sales opportunities. While that may be a big portion of them it’s important to remember trade shows are more than just sales.

For us, at ER2, trade shows provide an important platform for some awesome face time with our current client base. Face time that we would otherwise not necessarily get the chance to have. Trade shows put us out in front of our clients and provides a really easy and relaxed way to interact with them. And because the sales side of it is always going to be there it actually reaffirms for our clients, the many reasons they chose to do business with us in the first place.

The key to this valuable interaction is knowing when it will be an opportunity. When we evaluate trade shows and determine which ones we will attend we are taking a look at few factors.

What is the related industry for the trade show?

Who will the attendee’s be at the trade show?

Have we participated in this trade show in prior years?

Based off the previous questions, does the trade show provide a sales platform, a client engagement platform or both?

For example there are certain trade shows we participate in every year even though most of the attendees are already our clients. We may have a few new client opportunities, however the main purpose for our attendance is simply to connect face to face with our existing clients in a fun environment. It’s an fantastic to pull feedback from our clients, what works for them and maybe what’s not working.

Next time a trade show opportunity arises, filter it through the questions and really understand the full potential of attending. Looking past the sales aspect of trade shows can add value and bring new interactions between you and your clients.

ER2 Perspective: ITAD Expansion

Emily Boser - Thursday, September 15, 2016

With the E-Scrap Conference just around the corner in New Orleans there will be discussion across the board surrounding a broad spectrum of industry topics!

One of those topics particularly, ITAD, has been of peak interest to many in the electronic recycling facet. There are so many things to consider when breaking into the ITAD sector, a lot that most overlook.

We, ER2, recently published an article in the September issue of E-Scrap News in partnership with Resource Recycling regarding this very topic...

Partnering with AZStRUT for their 15th Annual Recycling Day!

Emily Boser - Wednesday, April 15, 2015

We are honored to have been asked to partner with Arizona’s AZStRUT for their 15th Annual Recycling Day this Saturday, April 18th. The event will run from 8:00am - 12:00pm and with over 20 locations across the Valley, this is an amazing event that makes it so easy for residents to responsibly recycle those electronics that have been sitting around the house for the last few months - or maybe years!

AZStRUT is a non-profit organization whose model program teaches students valuable technology skills; provides quality refurbished computers to schools and non-profits around the state; and benefits the environment by diverting old equipment from our landfills. AZStRUT teachers train over 500 students each year at their 15 refurbishing schools across Arizona!

We believe it is incredibly important to educate the public and provide easy outlets for people to take a responsible approach to recycling electronics. Outlets where the public feels safe recycling data-sensitive items such as laptops or cell phones. It is with great excitement we align with AZStRUT to not only keep electronics out of our landfills, but to provide 2nd, 3rd and possibly 4th lives for this equipment by reintroducing back into the system as a form of education for current students.
